Ascuaga Nugget sale approved

Nugget

John Ascuaga's Nugget has been sold. Under new owners, the casino and hotel will continue hosting major Reno events like Hot August Nights.

Nevada gambling regulators have given final approval for the sale of John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks, ending five decades of family ownership.

The Nevada Gaming Commission approved the sale Thursday to a private investment group for an undisclosed price.

Former Chief Operating Officer Stephen Ascuaga says selling the company was not an easy decision for his family.

"It's been extremely emotional. I'm not going to short sell that. It's been emotional for our family and really deciding, 'Is this the way we want to go?' It is a bit bittersweet because while we've made 58 years of relationships and great customers and great employees, we also realize that this is a real opportunity to move forward for years to come."

Global Gaming & Hospitality will operate the resort located in the heart of Sparks along Interstate 80.

The Nugget is the largest employer in Sparks with 1,300 workers.
