Finalists Announced for Washoe Superintendent

Washoe County School District

The Board of Trustees has selected five finalists in the search for a new Washoe County School District Superintendent.

Two of the finalists are internal candidates from within the school district. And one has ties to the area.

-- Paul LaMarca, currently serving as chief school accountability officer for the Washoe County School District;

-- Pedro Martinez, currently serving as deputy superintendent of schools for the Clark County School District in Las Vegas (a position he also once held with Washoe County);

-- Judy Peppler, currently serving as chief transformation officer/chief of staff for the Wake County Public School System in Raleigh, N.C.;

-- Harrison Peters, currently serving as chief of schools for Chicago Public Schools in Chicago, IL;

-- Jane Woodburn, currently serving as deputy superintendent of the Washoe County School District.

School Board President Ken Grein says leadership is the most important quality he's looking for.

"You know, we want the best for our 63,000 students here," he said. "And these [candidates] have definitely surfaced to the top."

The finalists were selected after two days of public meetings this week. The district will now hold public town hall meetings with each of the finalists next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Grein says the board's willing to start the process all over again if a clear choice doesn't emerge next week. And he admits outgoing Superintendent Heath Morrison set the bar pretty high for his eventual replacement, having been named National Superintendent of the Year back in February.

"We want Washoe County School District to be the best," Grein said. "We've produced one national superintendent. We want to produce another."

Grein says the board is hoping to have the new superintendent in place at least before the start of the new school year.
