Nevada's First Wind Farm Brings Added Benefits, Concerns
Michael Hagerty
Spring Valley Wind Farm
Nevada’s first commercial-scale wind farm opened last week 20 miles east of Ely. Besides their imposing presence on the landscape, KUNR's Michael Hagerty reports the wind turbines are having an effect on the area in other ways too.
Businesses in the area, including Ely, are seeing a boost -- at least temporarily. But will it last? There are also environmental concerns, such as how the turbines will affect bats that migrate through the area and how the wind farm might affect the pristine night skies at nearby Great Basin National Park.
