Northern Nevada tribal communities invest in traditional and tech. businesses

Two Native American Tribes in Nevada have recently received grants from the USDA's Rural Development Program for potential business enterprises, using both traditional and new technology. KUNR's Will Stone spoke with the USDA's Acting Undersecretary Doug O'Brien about the opportunities and challenges of rural startups.
The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe recently received a grant for a tribally-owned internet service. The tribe has already installed 44 miles of fiber optic cable in hopes of providing broadband service to the reservation and perhaps neighboring communities, as well. On the other side of the state, the Ely Shoshone Tribe would like to draw on traditional resources like pine nut gathering and wood cutting.
