The life and career of acclaimed Nevada author and journalist Robert Laxalt are captured in a new book published by the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The biographical book Robert Laxalt: The Story of a Storyteller was written by Laxalt's colleague Warren Lerude, a professor emeritus of journalism for UNR. At the book's release event this week, Lerude remembered his close friend who was a journalist in Reno and Carson City, as well as the author of 17 books, including Sweet Promised Land.

"Harper and Row published Sweet Promised Land in the autumn of 1957. The book quickly became an international classic and a voice for many immigrants to America, joyously to the Basques both in America and in the provinces of France and Spain. Sweet Promise Land because a celebration of their roots, their spirit, and their lives."

Laxalt died in 2001 at age 77.
