Tuesday the U.S. Department of Education named two Washoe County schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognized 286 schools nationwide, including Elizabeth Lenz and Ted Hunsberger Elementary Schools in Reno.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools program honors public and private primary and secondary schools where students perform at high levels or where significant improvements have helped student achievement levels.

Both Washoe schools were named as "Exemplary High Performing" Schools, and it's the first time in at least a decade that two county schools received the honor in the same year. Only one other school in Nevada received the honor.

The schools will be recognized during a ceremony in Washington D.C. in November.
