Amazon Competitor Opens Warehouse Near Reno, Bringing 500 Jobs

Marcus Lavergne

A new e-commerce company plans to bring 500 jobs to the Reno-Sparks area in the next 5 years. The news came at a press conference Thursday. Reno Public Radio’s Marcus Lavergne was there and has the story.

Jet.com has already opened its 160,000 square-foot warehouse in Northern Nevada. The company, which launched in July, is known as a “smart shopping platform” and competes with companies like Amazon.com.

Marc Lore is Jet.com's founder and CEO and spoke at yesterday’s event.

“At the end of the day, it is the strategic location, the ability to expand the footprint, the speed at which the city can move to help us build new facilities in the future, so that flexibility’s really important,” Lore said. “Then it’s about the people. The quality and the talent of the people that work there is incredible.”

Governor Brian Sandoval was also there. He said that Jet.com, and companies like it, are taking Nevada to a higher economic and industrial level.

“We need to get on the ground floor of the new economy,” Sandoval said. “Part of that is this logistics and distribution economy. Now we have Jet.com, we have Amazon, we have Zulily; these are three of the biggest players in that industry, and they call Northern Nevada home.”

Jet.com plans to fill at least 150 of its 500 positions this year alone.
