Three term Congressman Joe Heck handily won the Republican primary for Nevada's open U.S. Senate seat.
Heck now faces Democratic challenger Catherine Cortez Masto in the general election to replace retiring Sen. Harry Reid.
Both candidates easily won their primary races, clinching large victories less than an hour after polls closed. Heck says he's ready to pivot to November.
"We're sticking with our plan, which has been extremely successful in being able to win what is a Democrat-leaning district in Congressional District 3," said Heck in an interview with KUNR.
The Republican one-star general fended off a primary challenge from Sharron Angle, who lost to Senator Reid in 2010.
Angle had tried to paint Heck as an establishment figure, but he rebuffed the label.
"I concentrate on strong national defense, low taxes, reasonable regulation, trying to get our economy back on track," said Heck. "I talk a lot about education and health care because those are two issues important to me. And then I let the voters decide what label they should apply."
Nevada's Senate race promises to be one of the most closely watched in the country, as Democrats seek to regain both houses of Congress.
Catherine Cortez Masto was the state's former attorney general and has Senator Reid's support. If elected, she would become the first Hispanic woman to serve in the Senate.
