Sex Offender Law Halted By Nevada Supreme Court

NV Dept of Public Safety

A last-gasp petition to the Nevada Supreme Court succeeded in blocking publication of the names of 5,200 registered sex offenders, at least for now.

The state high court issued an order early Friday preventing a notification law while it considers constitutional questions raised by lawyers representing 17 plaintiffs in Vegas.

Attorneys are appealing a district court judge's go-ahead to post names, photos and addresses of offenders.

They argue the law treats offenders unevenly and the state has no method to correct errors.

Julie Butler, with the Department Public of Safety, says the law was designed to align the registration system with federal guidelines.

“It’s really more for consistency for community notification and for the public to know who they’re dealing with," Butler said. "If a tier one is always tier one is always tier one, you kind of have a frame of reference.”

It was adopted by the state Legislature in 2007, but has been on hold since then.
