Important changes will impact Nevada’s sex offender registration system next month. The Nevada Supreme Court finally cleared the way for the 2007 Assembly bill earlier this year. Reno Public Radio’s Marcus Lavergne has more:
When a federal judge challenged the constitutionality of AB 579 nine years ago, its enforcement was put on hold. The law is set up to align the state’s sex offender registration system with federal guidelines.
Julie Butler is with the Nevada Department of Public Safety.
“It’s really more for consistency for community notification and for the public to know who they’re dealing with," Butler said. "If a tier one is always tier one is always tier one, you kind of have a frame of reference.”
Starting July 1st, offenders will be categorized solely based on conviction and the victim's age. The classification will also show how long and how often a sex offender has to register with the state.
Nevada currently has more than 6,500 registered sex offenders.
