TMCC's New President Wants To Fast-Track Education

TMCC

The new president of Truckee Meadows Community College has been in office for two weeks now. Our News Director Michelle Billman has the details.

Karin Hilgersom wants to continue capitalizing on the things TMCC is doing well, like working with area employers to tailor classroom lessons to industry needs.

She also wants to expand the school's partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno to grow accelerated learning options for TMCC students.

"But what we're going to hone in on first are dual credit options for high school students," she says, "getting high school students across the finish line, not just with their high school diploma, but with some college credits completed."

Hilgersom says accelerated learning will be inextricably tied to region's ability to meet growing workforce demands. And for the first time ever, TMCC will be offering 4-year bachelor's degree programs this fall, one in logistics operations management and the other in emergency management and homeland security.

Michelle Billman is a former news director at KUNR Public Radio.
