This American Life is the most sought after storytelling program on Public Radio. The writers think of the show as journalism, yet it is different. It has won all of the major broadcasting awards, and is also often the most popular podcast in the country, with more than a half million people downloading each week.
The format and the inspiration behind the show are out-of-the-box unique. Each show features a theme, and is broken down into a variety of stories on that theme. Generally speaking, it is the story of everyday people, but there is the occasional celebrity. For example, on one show, producers taped for 24 hours in an all-night restaurant; another show featured forming a band from musicians' classified ads.
Ira Glass, the creator of This American Life, debuted the show in 1995 and has since remained producer and host of the popular program. The show's first year was produced on a budget that was tight even by U.S. public radio standards. The staff has since grown in numbers and popularity. The program will occasionally do its own version of national news stories including award-winning economics coverage that spawned another program called Planet Money.
This American Life is produced by Public Radio International. For more information, visit http://www.thisamericanlife.org.
