Air Date: 08/02/12 It's heartbreaking and puzzling to figure out how to handle the grandparent role when one of your parents has a substance abuse problem - be it alcohol, prescription drugs, or recreational drugs. You want your children to have the many benefits of a grandparent while still being safe. Unfortunately, most grandparents don't understand the concern. The using grandparent may not feel like it isn't a genuine concern, while the sober grandparent may not want to address the issue. As much as it may hurt, it is important to note that while one grandparent is abusing substances the grandchild may not be safe in the care of the grandparents.
