The idea being to avoid a divorce by checking out if the relationship is really compatible through living together first. Moral conviction aside, research suggests we really don't know the answer to that question. Most couples who live together don't progress to getting married, and more people live with a number of partners before getting married. Concerns differ between couples that are dating and couples that are married, this we know. And it stands to reason that couples living together prior to marriage place themselves in a circumstance fraught with the problems of both dating and married couples.
