Primary Elections: Nevada's State Senate

Jun 10, 2018

It's primary season again, and while much of the attention is focused on top-of-the ticket races, especially U.S. senator and governor, there's still a fight to control Nevada's state legislature.

Nearly four million voters went to the polls in California Tuesday, to help narrow a crowded field of office seekers ahead of the November general election. To help us break down that primary, KUNR’s Political Reporter Paul Boger joins us now to talk about the results.

When Las Vegas businessman Jared Fisher announced his plan to run for governor last year, he did so by riding his bike across the state. Since then, the political outsider has faced an uphill battle to gain traction ahead of next month's Republican Primary.

Early voting for Nevada's primary election begins Saturday, but what's on the ballot and what do voters need to know before they head to the polls? KUNR's Paul Boger spoke with Deanna Spikula, the Washoe County Registrar of Voters, to find out more.

Deanna, thank you so much for joining me. Let's talk about how the primary is different than the general election.

With just three weeks until the primary, Nevada’s top Democratic candidates for governor met in Las Vegas Monday night for the first gubernatorial debate of the 2018 midterm elections. Clark County Commissioners Steve Sisolak and Chris Giunchigliani sparred over several issues, including gun control, taxes, economic development, and raising the state’s minimum wage.

Nevadans will soon head to the polls to determine who will become the Republican and Democratic nominees for governor. Among the candidates most likely to get the nod is the state's current attorney general, Adam Laxalt.

This year's primary elections are just around the corner, and among the seats up for grabs are all the top jobs inside the state's executive branch. Reno Public Radio's Paul Boger sat down with our reporter Jacob Solis to find out how those races are shaping up.

Clark County Commissioner and Democrat, Steve Sisolak, is arguably primed to become the frontrunner for his party's nomination for governor, based on fundraising efforts, significant endorsements, and name recognition. To see where he stands on the issues, he spoke to our news director, Michelle Billman, about his agenda as governor and how he plans to appeal to voters in Northern Nevada.

This spring, six Nevada democrats are vying to become their party's nominee for governor. Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani is among the candidates most likely to get the nod this June. The former assemblywoman and head of the state teacher's union has taken on the mantle of the "progressive choice" in this year's election.
