Isn't She Lovely? NASA Gets First Image From Jupiter

Jul 12, 2016

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - A NASA spacecraft has sent back the first pictures since arriving at Jupiter.

An image released Tuesday shows Jupiter surrounded by three of its four largest moons. The picture was taken on Saturday when the Juno spacecraft was circling 3 million miles away. Even at that distance, Jupiter's Great Red Spot - a centuries-old atmospheric storm - was visible.

Juno entered orbit around Jupiter last week after a five-year journey. It's on a 20-month mission to map the giant planet's poles, atmosphere and interior.

For the first time, a planet has been identified inside a triple-star system. The discovery was made by a University of Arizona graduate student, and from the Arizona Science Desk, Sara Hammond reports.

The orbit of such a planet influenced by a trio of stars would be expected to be unstable, likely resulting in the planet being ejected from the system. This planet, whose mass is four times that of Jupiter, has survived.
