Even though she was too young to vote in this election, local high school student Avery Thunder shares this commentary for KUNR’s Youth Media program on how she feels about former Vice President Joe Biden being declared the winner. She also explores what she hopes his presidency will bring during the pandemic.

Biden won the election, which I’m happy about because I supported him. I come from a really liberal family, so I think that it was a really good day in my house.

I’m still nervous when it comes to the pandemic. There’s been some stuff coming out about vaccines; I’m hoping that keeps going, but it’s just really hard because I feel like every single day there’s a different statistic or, you know, a study that comes out about COVID.

I just don’t exactly know what I’m supposed to be thinking, like, should I be getting my hopes up that I could go to prom this year? Or should I just be [thinking] like, I probably won’t get to do anything until like halfway through my senior year? I feel like there’s never, like, a solid response because it’s like, we’ll have the vaccine done by this time, but we don’t know if we’ll be able to distribute it, and different sources say different things.

Coming back to the Biden thing, I guess what I’m happy about is that, hopefully, when Biden is in office, there won’t be so much confusion on what is going on. We’ll, like, actually be told what the timeline is for just everything: when the vaccine is going to be done, when testing is going to be done, when it’s going to be distributed to us. I assume it’s going to be distributed to health care workers first. Are we sending it to their families, too? I’d assume we’d distribute it to areas that are more vulnerable first, but, you know, we just don’t know. I’m hoping that since he won, we’ll have a better understanding of what’s going on.
