An official with the Nevada System of Higher Education says differences between the newly named interim chancellor and Dan Klaich, who's retiring next week, will lead to success. Reno Public Radio’s Marcus Lavergne has more.

John Valery White will step in as NSHE’s chancellor until June 2017.

The Board of Regents vote to hire White was unanimous. Chairman Rick Trachok says White will be a different kind of leader due to his experience as a former Provost of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and a former dean of its law school.

“John White has a very clear understanding of the role of our institutions’ presidents and the challenges we face as each of the institutions and as a system,” Trachok said. “He has just a much deeper level of understanding of what all that requires.”

Trachok notes that White is not interested in applying for the permanent chancellor position, so that search is underway.

Klaich will retire early amidst accusations of misleading law makers about the NSHE funding formula. He’ll still receive full pay and benefits totaling more than $330,000 until his contract ends next year.
