Nevada public school students are doing better in math and science, according to an annual education report released yesterday. But as Jordan Mitchell reports, they're still lagging behind their national counterparts.Findings from the National Assessment of Educational Progress show the highest number of Nevada fourth-graders were proficient in math in a decade, and roughly 67 percent of public school eight-graders had at least basic math skills.State schools Superintendent Keith Rheault says the numbers mean programs are working. "It shows that we're moving in the right direction with programs we're offering with in state as far as addressing the deficiencies in math and reading."Despite the gains, Rheault says Nevada still ranks below the national average in overall student performance, but now ranks in the top quarter of states making gains. Nevada students continued to score lower than the national average in math, reading, writing and science.
