Washoe County school District Superintendent Heath Morrison is leaving the district after accepting a position as the superintendent for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District in North Carolina. Morrison spoke at a press conference Thursday morning, saying the decision weighed heavy on his heart, but a major contributor was that most of his family is on the east coast, in Florida and Virginia. "After much thoughtful deliberation I feel this is the right thing to pursue, and so I've agreed to pursue that process," Morrison said. He was one of three finalists for the job and said he's comfortable leaving Washoe County because he feels like he's left the district in a good place. "No one's work in public education is ever done. I feel like Washoe County School District is in a great place to continue to get better and better and better. And I know that's going to happen," he said. Morrison came to Reno in 2009 he was instrumental in developing a new strategic plan for the district. He was named the National Superintendent of the Year in February. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board will officially vote on Morrison's selection on Tuesday.
