Laxalt Announces Bid for Governor

Jacob Solis

Nevada’s Republican Attorney General Adam Laxalt is making his bid to become the state’s next governor official.

The 39-year-old conservative made the announcement via press release yesterday quickly followed by a campaign event in Las Vegas in the morning with a stop in Sparks later in the afternoon.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters in Northern Nevada, including several current Republican lawmakers, Laxalt told attendees that his goal as governor will be to ensure the state's bright future for his children.

"I'm running for governor so that future generations of Nevadans can dream and thrive in the years to come," Laxalt said. "I'm running for governor so that Sophia, Isabella and my soon-to-be-born son can live in a new chapter of liberty. The same liberty that drew immigrants like Dominique Laxalt and thousands of others to this state."

Laxalt didn't go into specifics, instead opting to use broad strokes to propose his agenda as governor. However, he did say the state does need to keep taxes low, remove barriers to job growth and continue funding public education while at the same time expanding school choice options.

It was a message that resonated with many of the rally's attendees including Brack Thompson, an accountant from Reno.

"Laxalt is the best conservative that we've got in the state," said Thompson. "He's our last hope because our last governor backstabbed us all. This guy is great. He does what he says he's going to do. He's a young man; he's got a lot of energy, and he's super smart and he's the future for us."

Laxalt isn't the only Republican running for governor. Before he can move on to the general election next November he'll first have to face state Treasurer Dan Schwartz and Las Vegas bike shop owner and political newcomer Jared Fisher in a primary for the Republican nomination.
