Burners Rejoice: Truckee to Get Its Own Maker Space

Truckee is about to get its own maker space, stocked with tools and materials to help locals get creative.

Morgan Goodwin made bringing a maker space to Truckee a big part of his campaign for town council this year. It was a message that resonated with the community.

“Through the town council campaign I met a lot of people who wanted to get involved,” Goodwin says. “We started having some meetings and creating a team of people who would be best positioned to make it happen.”

First, they picked a name: The Truckee Roundhouse, named for the town’s railroad history. Then in May, the group began meeting with Truckee airport officials and by August they had secured a lease on a hangar. That lease begins December first. In the meantime, the Roundhouse board of directors – all volunteers from the community – are working to secure tool donations and funding.

Once the space opens in January, Goodwin says it will offer all-access passes for $50 a month that will be “like having a gym membership, where instead of going to use the treadmills and the free weights, you’re coming to use the welding machines and the laser cutter … to be creative,” Goodwin says.

Eventually the Roundhouse will also offer classes and host events.

The Truckee Roundhouse is filling this hangar with tools and materials for creative projects. The new maker space will open in early January.
