Many types of violent crimes and property crimes are increasing in Reno. That's according to an annual report released by the Reno Police Department this week. Our contributor Bob Conrad of ThisisReno has the story.
From 2013 to 2015, the number of robberies and assaults increased, and reported rapes nearly doubled. There were 70 rapes were reported in 2013 and 136 were documented last year. During that time, the homicide rate has remained steady.
While Reno saw a 7-percent increase for violent crimes, there was actually a slight decrease nationally for the same time period.
At recent city budget hearings, Mayor Hillary Schieve advocated for hiring more police officers and said that staffing remains at 1991 levels despite area growth.
“Crime is on the rise. Again, going back to this, I think this is the number one priority in our city,” she said.
The so-called “clearance rates” of solved cases remain mostly under the national average as well.
