The public comment period closes Tuesday, Dec. 22 for a new project next to Northstar Resort. While developers have reduced the project's size, some environmental groups remain concerned about its impact.
The Martis Valley West Project was initially submitted to Placer County two years ago, but has changed significantly since then after conservation groups pushed for more open space.
The current plan proposes moving the development from its original site to a parcel of land adjacent to Northstar.
This move frees up more than 6,000 acres of open space. It also includes a 40 percent reduction in the number of residential units.
Blake Riva is one of the developers.
"When you combine the conservation component — 6,376 acres — a density reduction of 600 units, and then locating new development adjacent to existing development, it's the right combination."
Still, some environmental groups believe more needs to be done.
Sierra Watch and Mountain Area Preservation point out that the developers have left out additional projects nearby, including a 550-site campground with amenities
The environmental groups say this too needs to be accounted for in the project's environmental impact report.
Placer County officials will weigh in early next year.
