Historical Resources Commission Wants UNR To Halt Building Plan

ThisisReno.com

The City of Reno’s Historical Resources Commission has issued a public letter calling on the University of Nevada, Reno to halt plans for a new academic building where historic homes are located. Reno Public Radio’s Bob Conrad reports.

The letter comes after months of discussions about UNR’s plans. The commission is requesting that the school reconsider locating a new College of Business building near multiple historic homes on Center Street.

Commission members would like the possibility of preserving the houses in place to be more thoroughly explored. University officials said back in July that they wanted to partner with the commission on relocating the homes, but commission members say that not enough options have been presented.

UNR officials have said that the business building has to be on the west side of Center Street because it will be a “signature building” at the gateway to campus. A UNR spokeswoman also said that school officials feel they have done and will continue to do their due diligence with this project.
