State Leaders are pushing back against a proposal that would reopen the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository in Southern Nevada.

According to the White House’s budget blueprint released Thursday, President Donald Trump is asking Congress to approve 120 million dollars to restart the repository’s operations.

"We think that that contradicts the notion of states rights and I think that Nevadans have spoken about what we think," says Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson, a Democrat from Las Vegas. "We hope that our federal delegation confirms and advocates for Nevadans that this is not something that we want."

The President’s proposal comes one day after the State of Texas filed a lawsuit in federal appeals court to force the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to reopen the repository. Most of Nevada’s Congressional delegation has derided both actions.
