Reno City Council to select newest member

The Reno City Council could decide Wednesday on its newest member. Reno Public Radio's Michelle Bliss reports that the group is interviewing candidates for the at-large council seat recently vacated by Hillary Schieve, who was elected mayor last month.

The council will interview 13 candidates who were selected as finalists from an original pool of more than seventy applicants.

Current city council members voted unanimously to use an appointment process for the open seat rather than having a general election based on voter approval. In order to winnow applicants down to a baker's dozen, council members each chose their top five candidates as finalists for the position.

All six current council members, including mayor Hillary Schieve who has a vote on the board, selected State Assemblyman David Bobzien as one of their top choices. Bobzien has served four terms representing District 24, which covers downtown Reno and several other sections of the city.

Other popular finalists who were selected by several council members include: Andrew Diss, the state director for an education advocacy group; Britton Griffith-Douglas, a local engineering firm executive; and Hilary Lopez, a consultant for financing affordable housing projects.

The council has seen several recent changes with the addition of its newest members Naomi Duerr and Paul McKenzie, who were sworn in last month, along with the conclusion of Bob Cashell's 12-year tenure as mayor.
