Now that Truckee Meadows Community College has been awarded a $2.25 million grant from the U.S. Commerce Department, the school will be renovating its technology center in Reno and offering two new career-track programs next spring. Jim New is the dean of applied industrial technology at TMCC. He says that over the past few months, interest from companies considering setting up their distribution and manufacturing centers in Northern Nevada has returned to pre-recession levels. "As we emerge from the recession, we're seeing more and more interest from companies that are located in other parts of the country. The biggest problem that they will encounter is finding a workforce that is ready to move into the positions that they will bring into the area. And we are doing our best to address that issue and meet those needs." New says that in order to meet those future needs, TMCC is starting cohort programs for jobs that most students have never even heard of, much less considered as a possible career. One cohort program is for future production technicians, who would perform equipment checks to ensure an assembly line is operating smoothly. The other program is for logistics technicians, who are responsible for maintaining, shipping, and billing inventory from warehouses. Each program will admit about 30 students.
