Wolf Pack's New Men's Basketball Coach To Be Named Shortly

Nevada Wolf Pack

The Nevada Wolf Pack could have a new men's basketball coach in place by next Thursday. Reno Public Radio's Michelle Bliss reports.

The Board of Regents for the Nevada System of Higher Education is holding a special meeting on Thursday. The agenda for that meeting says UNR President Marc Johnson will request approval for a multi-year employment contract for a new coach.

A national search has been underway since former Coach David Carter was fired earlier this month. Athletic Director Doug Knuth has led that search effort, which has been quite hush-hush.

"One of the best things I can do for any of our candidates is to just talk about it as little as possible," Knuth says, "because I don't want to expose anyone. They have families and they have jobs and they have recruits and current student athletes and everyone else that they're involved with, and, you know, it might hurt them to talk about it."

This search has also been conducted at lightning speed so that the new coach can begin recruiting players immediately.

Knuth announced Coach Carter's firing right after Nevada lost to UNLV 67-46 in the first round of the Mountain West Conference tournament. The team finished this season with a record of 9 and 22 and has posted losing records for four of the last five seasons.
