One big idea that’s gaining traction nationwide is small: tiny homes.

The housing supply in Northern Nevada is far below demand, which has led to a rapid rise in costs.

Many are calling for more development, but builders in the community say they’re unable to keep up.

More than a third of Washoe County residents are considered burdened by housing costs. That's according to research conducted by Enterprise Community Partners -- a non-profit that advocates for affordable housing options across the country.

The median sales price of a single-family home in Reno is now higher than it was during the peak of the housing boom just before the Great Recession.

This surge in pricing is reminding many in the region of the thriving market of the mid-2000s, as well as the devastation the ensuing crash caused to Northern Nevada.

In the last few years, the University of Nevada, Reno, saw a spike in enrollment even as nationwide numbers decline. But with that increase in students comes another problem; where are they all supposed to live? And as Reno Public Radio's Jacob Solis reports, the answer is not so simple.

A new study from the Pew Charitable Trusts found that rents have been rising faster than incomes. Many families have a hard time paying for housing and buying food. Our reporter Anh Gray checks in with the head of the region’s food bank to see how housing security is linked to food security.

People who are considered rent burdened spend roughly a third or more of their income on housing. This leaves many families with less for other essentials like food or healthcare. Reno Public Radio’s Anh Gray reports there’s a program that is helping low-income people battling illnesses get the nutrition they need.

Older Americans are much more likely to experience the burden of high housing costs. Washoe County Senior Services provides a variety of programs, serving more than 20,000 people in the region. The lunch program is one of the most popular with many, including Bud Matlock. He lives in public housing and shares his story with KUNR.

The Reno City Council has given developers the green light to begin working on a massive housing development in Cold Springs.

There has been no major housing development built in the Truckee Meadows since the 2009 recession. Now a group of developers is looking to build roughly 5,000 new homes in the White Lake Basin north of Reno. But residents already living in the area argue the planned community would create problems by increasing traffic congestion and demand for resources like water.

Reno Youth Homelessness On The Rise According To Survey

For one day in January, cities across the country hold a point-in-time count to survey the homeless population in their county. In Reno, organizers recently hosted an event to count homeless youths, specifically. They found that the number of 18-to-24 year-olds without a home is on the rise.

More than 150 people met in Incline Village Monday to discuss the economic challenges facing the Tahoe Basin.

Faith-based organizations and charity groups are looking to city leaders in Reno for help in creating a tiny house village to shelter some of the chronically homeless in the Truckee Meadows.

Based on a similar village in Seattle, Washington, the plan would include 40 fairly austere tiny-homes. The buildings would provide few luxuries beyond four-walls, a roof and a door that locks. The village would surround a central building that includes bathrooms and kitchen facilities.

Reno City Council members are voicing frustration at a lack of progress on the issue of affordable housing. Our contributor Bob Conrad covered their last meeting and has the latest update for our News Director Michelle Billman. 

Housing prices continue to rise in the greater Reno-Sparks market, with new listings and sales of homes down from this time last year.

Reno Public Radio’s Noah Glick reports.

April’s median price for a home in the Reno-Sparks area was more than $323,000, up 10 percent from a year ago.

That’s according to the latest report from the Reno/Sparks Association of Realtors.

There’s not enough affordable housing in Washoe County…and more and more residents are getting priced out of owning their own homes.  That’s according to a study by the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency. Kim Robinson is the organization’s executive director and Jeremy Smith is GIS coordinator. They talked to our news director Michelle Billman about their findings.
