TEDx Reno

Cultural competency is a form of training widely used in corporate and public work settings. Julie Hogan is a business professor at the University of Nevada, Reno who has devised many of these training materials, but she says it’s not effective. Now, she's proposing a different approach, a deeper dive through a concept called cultural humility. She’ll be giving a talk for Reno’s TedX series on this topic and she gave a preview to our News Director Michelle Billman.

The University of Nevada TEDx event is a series of talks from local and national thinkers who have innovative ideas to share. At this year's event later this month, Reno marriage and family therapist Steven Ing will be discussing how to select an ideal mate. He says partner selection is a big component for avoiding relationship trouble.

Ming Li Wu is a senior at the Davidson Academy and she'll be giving a talk at Saturday's Tedx event in Reno. It's a live, local version of the international Ted Talk program, which aims to share meaningful ideas through compelling speeches.

Wu met up with our News Director Michelle Billman to chat about her experience as a spoken word poet, which will play a large part in her talk. She shared some of her work as well. Let's take a listen.

KUNR: Ming Li, thanks for joining me today.

The day-long speaker conference called TEDx Reno returns for its third year to the Lear Theater downtown, with more local voices than ever before. Reno Public Radio's Julia Ritchey tells us more about the lineup.

The theme for this year's TEDx is Resurgence, capitalizing on the momentum the city has gained since landing new tech companies and rebranding itself as a college town.

Doug Erwin is a co-organizer of the event.

Reno author Mignon Fogarty, a.k.a. Grammar Girl, recently gave a talk for the city’s TEDx program held at the University of Nevada, Reno. It’s the local version of the national Ted Talk program, which shares inspiring discussions from leaders across the globe. Mignon’s topic was language, of course, but instead of focusing on the rules, she highlighted some of the rule-breakers. Reno Public Radio’s Michelle Bliss joined her to learn more.
