The monthly event series Silicon Mountain is celebrating a new livestream that lets anyone join in, and a regular viewing party at a Reno co-working space. Reno Public Radio’s Amy Westervelt went to one of those meet-ups to learn more.

"Hi there, I'm here to talk about 'Why hackathons,' ..."

Truckee's first maker space is set to open this summer. Reno Public Radio's Amy Westervelt has this progress report.

At a potluck for the Truckee Roundhouse, future members of the maker space mingle, eat chili and talk about what tools they still need.

"Fireside Pizza just signed on to buy us a table saw, Truckee Lumber is getting a CNC  and Marg's Taco Bistro is pitching in with a forge...," says Truckee town councilman and vice-mayor Morgan Goodwin.

Locals are being priced out of the Tahoe housing market, according to a regional study due out this summer.

Driving along Lakeshore Boulevard, with Lake Tahoe glimmering in the spaces between elaborate lakefront homes, it's hard to imagine that anyone struggles financially here.

"Respondents to our survey were mostly full-time, professional residents and the majority of them are overpaying for housing, they have multiple jobs in alarming numbers and are seemingly struggling to make ends meet here."

Reactions to the global climate agreement reached in Paris last week have been mixed. Some applaud the move to reduce emissions and cap warming temperatures while others criticize the agreement’s lack of binding commitments. On the heels of that summit, we take a look at the intersection between those global discussions and what's happening right here in our region.

A controversial development plan goes to the Truckee Planning Commission Monday. Reno Public Radio's Amy Westervelt has more.

Canyon Springs, a 203-home development, has been on the books in Truckee for close to 30 years now, but is moving closer to reality than it’s ever been. The development’s final environmental impact report – or EIR -- will be presented to the Truckee Planning Commission during an unprecedented two-day hearing.

Burners Rejoice: Truckee to Get Its Own Maker Space

Oct 28, 2015

Truckee is about to get its own maker space, stocked with tools and materials to help locals get creative.

Morgan Goodwin made bringing a maker space to Truckee a big part of his campaign for town council this year. It was a message that resonated with the community.

“Through the town council campaign I met a lot of people who wanted to get involved,” Goodwin says. “We started having some meetings and creating a team of people who would be best positioned to make it happen.”
