Second Human West Nile Virus Case In Washoe County

Another person in Washoe County is infected with West Nile Virus. That makes two confirmed in the last week, as well as one horse in Washoe Valley. 

The Washoe County Health District reports the latest individual lives near Hidden Valley in east Reno and was hospitalized for several days with the neuroinvasive form of the virus. This form can access and infect the nervous system and cause symptoms such as fever, muscle and joint pain and headache.  

Washoe Health District Wants E-Cigarettes Regulated

Washoe County health officials are urging lawmakers to regulate electronic cigarettes. Reno Public Radio's Esther Ciammachilli reports.

With the number of young people using e-cigarettes growing nationwide, the Washoe County Health District released a position statement this week calling on the state legislature to set up some ground rules.

Mosquitos infected with the West Nile virus have been found in Spanish Springs.

Jim Shaffer, who is with the Washoe County Health District, says mosquito trapping and testing have been ongoing all summer. As soon as mosquitos test positive for the virus, the district has to act fast.

“You don’t want mosquitos to bite people or transmit disease," Shaffer says. "So when they become an adult, they have both those capabilities and they’re moving.”
