The University of Nevada, Reno spring semester has begun with a record enrollment of more than 19,000 students on campus. More recognized scholars and growing diversity among the university's students continue recent years' student population trends. University President Marc Johnson and Student Services Vice President Shannon Ellis appeared on KUNR'sBeyond the Headlines to talk about diversity and expectations for these students and the activities that welcome them to campus. The freshman class represents growing numbers of students from northern and southern Nevada with higher average test scores than previous classes, and it boasts a growth in recognized scholars from the previous year. Transfer and international students are also increasing.
Other notes provided by the University of Nevada, Reno:
- Enrollment at the University of Nevada, Reno has steadily increased over the past several years and this trend continues for fall 2014. The University’s fall 2014 enrollment will surpass 19,000 students. Last year, the University welcomed its largest enrollment to date, with 18,776 undergraduate and graduate students.
- Enrollment figures for fall 2014 will be finalized in mid-September following the “add/drop” deadline, but is anticipated to end up in the mid-19,000 range.
- The freshman class will include a continued strong representation of Nevada students with an increase in students from Clark County as well as from out of state. Nevada students include those from Washoe County School District, which has partnered with the University to smooth the path to college and have students better prepared for success.
- It is anticipated to be one of the most diverse classes in the school’s history.
- Admissions data indicates the freshman class will arrive with higher incoming test scores and grade point averages.
- The freshman class includes 14 National Merit Scholars, one National Achievement Scholar and 101 Presidential Scholars. All are increases over last year’s recognized scholars.
- Graduate student enrollment is especially difficult to project at this point. A potentially flat enrollment in the number of graduate students is anticipated.
- For the first time ever, the University was unable to accommodate all residence hall requests. The University’s residence halls are at 115 percent of their design capacity. To meet demand, rooms in Argenta Hall remain converted from doubles to triples, and Juniper Hall rooms remain at double occupancy versus single occupancy.
- This semester also marks the opening of Ponderosa Village on Evans Ave. for graduate students and families.
- There are 2,600 students assigned to the residence halls this fall. New facilities are needed to support future student housing needs and continually improve on the quality of accommodations offered to new students. Construction is now underway on Peavine Hall, scheduled to open in August 2015.
