Washoe County To Examine How Regional Planning Is Done

Washoe County Manager John Slaughter said that while he is cautiously optimistic about the region’s economic future, the county is increasing its reserves in case there's another economic downtown in the future. He made the comments at this year's annual state of the county address. Reno Public Radio's Bob Conrad was there and has more.

Slaughter says that growth and development will get a sharp look in the near future. One of the county’s two bill-draft requests for the next legislative session will include an examination of regional planning legislation.

“It’s time for a comprehensive review of the legislation that guides regional planning in the Truckee Meadows,” he said. “We’ll be working with all of our stakeholders—the City of Reno, City of Sparks and others—on that. We’ll be very up front and very transparent about that process.”

During the address, Slaughter also outlined new initiatives the county is unrolling, including streamlining the permitting for new buildings and providing faster processing of business licenses.

Slaughter said that annexation of some county properties by the City of Reno will also be considered. That can occur at the request of property owner,
