KUNR State Government Journalist
KUNR Public Radio seeks an ambitious reporter to join and grow with our station’s state government coverage team as it prepares to cover the 2025 Nevada Legislature and beyond. This reporter will aspire to explain how state policies and politics directly affects the lives of everyday Nevadans through a combination of digital-first storytelling, broadcast presentations and live in-person community events.
The position reports to the KUNR managing editor. Duties primarily include researching, conducting interviews, and creating original news stories across digital and broadcast platforms, with a primary focus on coverage for web, social media and newsletter audiences. This reporter will be expected to build a state government beat that includes breaking news, regular feature stories and occasional in-depth series. This will include working on KUNR’s monthly show/podcast, Purple Politics Nevada, as a producer and occasional host.
This reporter position was made possible by a generous two-year grant that aims to expand access to state government coverage across Nevada, which includes employing a translation service to distribute KUNR state government coverage in Spanish. KUNR Public Radio is committed to ensuring this position remains sustainable after the grant funding ends. Over the course of the two-year grant, this position will assist producing and participating in six live community engagement forums about state government across the state of Nevada.
KUNR Public Radio, based at the University of Nevada, Reno, is a unit of UNR’s Reynolds School of Journalism with a staff of 24 people across all departments. KUNR prides itself on punching above its weight. It is a member of the NPR regional hub, the Mountain West News Bureau, and has partnerships with American Public Media, Factchequeado and other Nevada-based non-profit media like The Nevada Independent and Nevada Public Radio in Las Vegas.
This position requires news reporting or related journalism experience that includes building a beat. Ideal candidates will have Spanish language skills and demonstrate vision for the role of public media in the changing information marketplace, an appreciation of diversity, equity and inclusion, and a collegial, collaborative spirit.
