About KUNR

KUNR, an outreach and engagement service of the University of Nevada, Reno, has been broadcasting from campus since October 7, 1963. We are a nonprofit, non-commercial, listener-supported public radio station licensed to the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education, which also holds the licenses for KNCC, our station in Elko, and KNCJ Nevada Classical and Jazz.

KUNR has been a member station of National Public Radio (NPR) since 1981 and carries many high-quality programs and other services. Our renowned local news staff, honored with several national awards, keeps our community informed and proud. Newsroom awards include but are not limited to: Associated Press, Edward R Murrow, Public Radio Dews Directors Incorporated, Public Media Journalist Association, Radio Television Digital News Association, Online News Association and Battle Born Journalist awards.

KNCC Elko began broadcasting in 1992, carrying KUNR’s signal. In 2016, we launched KNCJ Nevada Classical and Jazz, a unique platform that provides 24/7 cultural programming. In addition to presenting music delivered by satellite, KNCJ has invested in producing local music shows such as Saturday Night Jazz and Wednesday Evening Classics, enriching our cultural connection.

In 2018, KUNR became an administrative unit of UNR’s Reynolds School of Journalism, reflecting the station’s increased emphasis on news reporting and digital distribution. In 2019, KUNR joined the Mountain West News Bureau (MWNB), a regional public radio station collaboration that produces and shares journalism about the Mountain West region.

We embrace our nonprofit status and mission of public service. We operate as a largely self-sustaining entity within UNR, thanks to the support and contributions of our listeners, business underwriters, federal funding, and grants from supporters. Our listeners and members are an integral part of our success.
