Biggest Little City Movement

Reno City Council voted Wednesday on a controversial change to the city's logo. Reno Public Radio's Julia Ritchey reports.

Council members approved the rebranding campaign, part of an effort to boost the city's image.

The city will adopt a secondary minimalist logo depicting an octagon with a single letter "R" inside alongside the tagline "Biggest Little City." The logo will cost about $234,000 to implement.

Abbi Whitaker co-led a grassroots effort to overhaul the logo. She defended the campaign against critics.

"It's not just a logo, it's not just a tagline and it's not just a hashtag," said Whitaker. "It's the innovation, it's the entrepreneurship, it's the arts, it's the passion and it's the collaboration."

No one spoke during public comment, but city staff said about 10 people had called in opposition and 16 in favor. Councilman Paul McKenzie said he did not support a complete overhaul.

"That is the most ghastly thing I've ever seen in my life," said McKenzie. "To think we're going to move our city forward with something like that on the door to our city vehicles just appalled me."

In other items, the council unanimously approved a one-year ban on new strip clubs downtown.
