The North American Scrabble Championship wrapped up Wednesday in downtown Reno. Our reporter Julia Ritchey tells us who spelled their way to victory.
Top Scrabble players from across the country competed in near silence during their final day of play. The five-day crossword tournament consisted of 31 rounds of competitive match-ups.
The event even had its own live stream with sports-like commentary.
Twenty-five-year-old twin brothers Charles and Thomas Reinke traveled from Middleton, Wisconsin. They've been playing competitively for about a decade.
"It's kind of refreshing to come to these tournaments because, in your everyday life, it's not really acceptable to be so obsessed with a board game," says Charles. "But once you get to one of these tournaments, you see that everyone is just as obsessed as you are."
Matthew Tunicliffe of Ontario, Canada, took home the grand prize of $10,000 and a trophy.
