The U.S. Supreme Courthas struck down an abortion law in Texas. Our News Director Michelle Billman checked in with local advocates on both sides to hear their thoughts on the controversial ruling.
The court voted 5-3 in opposition to portions of a Texas law that required abortion providers to have admitting privileges with a nearby hospital and to meet the standards of surgical centers in the state.
"I was beyond disappointed. As a woman, I am absolutely appalled that the Supreme Court would take the profits of the abortion industry over the health and safety of women."
That's Melissa Clement, the president of Nevada Right To Life.
The Supreme court ruled that both requirements of the law created significant obstacles for women seeking abortions without offering sufficient medical benefits.
Elisa Cafferata is president of Nevada Advocates for Planned Parenthood Affiliates. She says this decision marks the start of a much larger battle.
"This was initially a relief, and then from there, it goes into this is just the beginning of the fight because this decision only applies to the health centers in Texas."
The ruling could jeopardize similar laws in other states, but that remains to be seen.
