A national startup competition is coming to Reno next month. Reno Public Radio’s Amy Westervelt reports that its goal is to support businesses that benefit women and families.

Hundreds of companies throughout the country are pitching their businesses at dozens of local events next month for a new competition called InnovateHER.

Reno business incubator The Cube will be hosting the competition for northern Nevada businesses. The deadline to submit a business plan is Friday, Nov. 13th, with the competition being held on the 19th.

Lauren Klein, CEO of GirlMade, a Reno organization that supports women in business, says she has been encouraging everyone in her network to enter.

“We want them to come to the pitch competition, submit their business plans, and be a part of something that could progress them on to winning some monies for their startups. Anything we can do to help women get comfortable to submit, compete, or understand opportunities, we curate that content.”

The Small Business Administration will pick 10 finalists from the local competitions. Those companies will travel to DC in March for a shot at winning one of three $70,000 prizes from Microsoft.
