Former Governor Brian Sandoval has officially been named the next president of the University of Nevada, Reno.

The Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education approved Sandoval's appointment to UNR's top position during a special meeting Thursday.

Sandoval will start in his new role early next month with an annual salary of $500,000.

“It's incredibly important to maintain an atmosphere of diversity, inclusion and equity on campus,” Sandoval told reporters during a press conference after the board's decision.

“I think it's really important not only to attract students here but to keep them here [and] allow them to graduate. To continue the research mission of this university and its connection to this community with regard to economic development. I think those are some of the things that, as I stand here today, are going to be immediate priorities,” Sandoval explained.

After leaving the governor's office in early 2019, Sandoval joined MGM Resorts as the president of global gaming development. He announced in April that he was stepping down from his position at MGM to pursue the job at UNR.

As a note of disclosure, the Board of Regents for the Nevada System of Higher Education holds the license to this station.
