Amid lingering public scrutiny, the Washoe County School Board is expected to look quite different after the June election. Reno Public Radio’s Anh Gray reports.
More than half of the board’s seven seats are on the ballot. About 20 people are vying for those four positions, and only one has an incumbent.
Notably absent from the candidate roster is outspoken trustee Howard Rosenberg. He ended up not filing for re-election by last week’s deadline after telling the RGJ he “welcomes challengers.”
After having already filed for re-election, trustee Lisa Ruggerio announced late last week that she was dropping out of the race. In a page-long statement, Ruggerio says she’s planning to focus on school safety issues instead.
The board turnover follows several controversies. This includes citations from the Nevada Attorney General's office for twice violating the state’s open meeting laws and for attempting to fire a superintendent — and later for the hiring of another.
The board oversees the school district’s 64,000 students and nearly half a billion dollar budget.
