A Reno doctor and other defendants in an alleged drug ring have been formally charged. Reno Public Radio’s Marcus Lavergne has more.

Daniel Bogden, U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada announced the indictment of Reno doctor Robert Rand and eight others on felony drug conspiracy and other charges. Wednesday, he told reporters it’s a sign of progress in Nevada’s battle against a serious drug abuse problem.

“We’re going to be reaching out to some of the hospitals, some of the doctors, some of the healthcare professionals, schools and others in the community to try to get the message out that this is some pretty bad stuff as far as opioid abuse.”

Authorities say one of Rand's patients, a former Nevada Football player, died of an oxycodone overdose last fall.

The eight other defendants were allegedly selling drugs at the Jones-West Ford dealership in Reno.
