Tesla's apprenticeship for K-12 students is bolstering Northern Nevada’s workforce for the Gigafactory east of Reno. The program is continuing despite the company’s recent announcement that it will be cutting 7 percent of its workforce. KUNR contributor Kaleb Roedel of the Northern Nevada Business View has more.
The new Manufacturing Development Program gives high school students the opportunity to eventually work full-time as production associates at Tesla after graduation.
Graduates in the apprenticeship program also have the option of receiving an education in automation and robotics at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno.
The program offers housing near the University of Nevada, Reno campus and professional development opportunities, such as financial literacy seminars.
According to Tesla, as part of its agreement to locate the Gigafactory in Nevada, the company is committed to pumping $37.5 million over five years into K-12 education. It’s unclear how much money the company is investing.
