Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske has certified the signatures on three petitions submitted for the November ballot, two of which will put the debate over renewable energy to voters.
The first petition, called the Energy Choice Initiative, garnered 77,000 signatures, 20,000 more than needed. That proposal seeks to amend the state constitution to open up the state's electricity market and give consumers more choices besides NV Energy.
A separate initiative brought by the rooftop solar coalition will ask voters to reinstate more favorable rates for homeowners with solar panels (under a program called net metering). That proposal also got enough signatures, but still faces a challenge before the state Supreme Court.
The final ballot initiative asks voters to amend the state constitution again to provide a tax exemption on certain medical equipment, such as oxygen tanks, ventilators and hospital beds.
