Fresh off a win in New Hampshire, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders made another stop in Reno over the weekend. Our reporter Julia Ritchey was there.
Sanders is stepping up his campaigning in Nevada less than a week before the Democratic caucus.
On Saturday, he appeared at a forum called “Real Solutions for Real People” sponsored by several local and national progressive groups and held at the University of Nevada, Reno.
The Vermont senator fielded several questions on western issues, including one from Autumn Harry, a UNR student and member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe.
“Today indigenous homelands across the country are threatened by destructive fossil fuel resource extraction methods, such as fracking, tar sands, pipelines and mining. …What are your plans for investing in and supporting indigenous people?“
“I think if you check my record, you will find that I have stood up and will continue to stand up to mining extraction companies that are trying to invade indigenous territory,” responded Sanders.
Representing the Hillary Clinton campaign, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker also took several questions on renewable energy, public lands and water management in the West.
A new poll by the Washington Free Beacon shows Nevada Democrats are split in their support for Clinton and Sanders.
