Bernie Sanders Campaign Opens First Reno Office

Julia Ritchey

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is opening a handful of new Nevada campaign offices, including one in Reno. Our reporter Julia Ritchey went down to check it out.

Half a dozen volunteers are typing away behind laptops at the new Reno headquarters of the Bernie Sanders campaign.

They’re overseen by Bridget Lavington, a state deputy field director for Sanders.

"We're expecting exponential week-over-week growth and that's part of the reason we brought so many paid staff into Nevada."

The new office is one of six opening this week and the only one in northern Nevada. Campaign officials plan to open as many as 12 offices and bring on anywhere from 25-100 staffers.

Lavington says having local offices makes it easier to coordinate volunteers.

"It's a place for volunteers to come and participate in grass roots field organizing tactics like phone banking, preparing canvases, getting ready to go knock on doors and a lot of training activities as well."

Rival Hillary Clinton's Reno office opened on South Virginia Street in September.  A kick-off party for the Sanders' Reno outpost is scheduled for Saturday.
