Washoe county officials are devising a multi-use plan for Peavine Mountain in response to concerns about recreational shooters sharing space with hikers and bikers. Our contributor Bob Conrad of ThisisReno.com has more.

Peavine has been plagued with complaints for years about recreational shooting taking place near residential areas. Commissioner Jeanne Herman is working with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office to develop a plan for the area, so that shooting will only be allowed in designated areas.

Commissioner Kitty Jung says the plan is needed quickly because of safety concerns but that hikers do bear some responsibility.

“Please talk to your group, too, because we’ve got reports that hikers can be quite aggressive, walking into these people and telling them, ‘You can’t shoot here.’ I think you should wear an orange vest; I think you should have a whistle; I think you need to take responsibility for your own safety and get out of there if they're shooting there.”

Jung says the sheriff’s office will be stepping up enforcement.
