Gloria Steinem: The Latina Vote Matters

Gloria Steinem is in Reno to promote her new book, but she also stopped by the Latino Research Center at the University of Nevada, Reno Tuesday. Our News Director Michelle Billman reports.

Steinem spoke with about two dozen first-generation Latina students at UNR to campaign for Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton. She says this is the first election she's seen that could be swayed by their vote.

"And it depends on turnout because so far the Latina vote is the least likely to turn out, less likely than the African American vote or the Asian American vote, but this election could make all the difference."

UNR senior Jackeline Duron attended the event and has been canvassing for Clinton lately. She says it's critical for campaigns to focus on conversations with individual voters and to understand that Latinos care about more than just the issue of immigration.

"But then, that's not the only thing the Latinex people are for. We care about education; we care about all these other things. We can focus on it more holistically."

Clinton's Republican opponent Donald Trump has been campaigning in North Carolina this week. A recent poll shows Trump leading in Nevada by 2 percent.
